ShmupadiGm Shift

June 13, 2010

This Tuesday, the first speight of proper shmup games will be coming to PSN in the form of doujin games Gundemonium Recollection, the unpronounceable GundeadliGne and Hitogata Happa. I can only hope this marks the beginning of a shift from Xbox to PS3 for the genre.

The 360 has been gifted with such games as Ikaruga, Trigger Heart Exelica and Shikigami no Shiro III, some of which I have only had the opportunity of playing on friends’ consoles. Of the next gen consoles, I only have a PS3, and although I love shmups, that doesn’t warrant a good enough reason alone for me to buy a 360.

During my year abroad in Japan, I played the arcade version of Cave shooter Deathsmiles and loved it to bits (see video below). It later received a release as an Xbox title, and a sequel which hit the top ten games in Japan last week, according to VGChartz. Considering that the number of Xbox owners is pretty low in Japan (around one fifth of PS3 owners), I’d imagine that Deathsmiles II would receive even more popularity.

With the iPhone capably playing bullet hell Espgaluda 2, shmups do seem to be spreading across an ever greater variety of mediums. If the release of these doujin games also pave the way for shmups into PSN, I for one will jump at them. Maybe then Deathsmiles upon me.
